Cognitive Neuroscience Society of India emblem

How the Society was founded

The Cognitive Neuroscience Society of India was formed by clinicians, scientists and engineers who held that the brain and the mind can only be understood together. It was registered in Bengaluru in 2015 and inaugurated at NIMHANS on 21 June 2015.

Why a society for brain and mind

In his message in the Inaugural Souvenir, Founder President Prof. C.R. Mukundan described cognitive neuroscience as the pursuit of understanding how mental processing emerges from the biological substrate of the brain. Attending to sensory input and retrieved information, recognising it, acting on it, and interpreting all of this under the influence of emotional arousal are the processes the Society set out to study.

These questions cross many disciplines, and the founders held that only integrated, multidisciplinary work could make real progress. The Society was their answer: one place where neurophysiologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, pharmacologists, speech and language scientists and engineers could share their work, and open the same pursuit to students entering the field.

The message also looked ahead to a Society website and a new journal through which members would share their work with others.

“We have no doubt that the mind or mental processing capabilities have emerged from the limited neural cells of the brain, but what can be mentally created is infinite!”
Prof. C.R. Mukundan, Founder President, in the Inaugural Souvenir, 21 June 2015
